Sports fans

Many people try and call themselves "sports" fans. However let's look at today's sporting events and decide whether or not you can call yourself, the reader, a sports fan.

- The NCAA volleyball championship finals were tonight on ESPN2 from Tampa, FL. Number one ranked Penn State, who had only dropped 5 sets all season, took on number 3 Texas. Texas jumped out to a 2 set lead and was prepared to shock the world when Penn State buckled down, played some of the most spectacular volleyball play I have ever seen and came all the way back for a 5th set win, 15-13.

- The New Mexico Bowl kicked off bowl season this afternoon with one of the greatest comebacks I have seen in recent history. Down by three with just over 8 minutes to go Wyoming true freshamn QB Austyn Carta-Samuels lead a 19 play 54 yard drive to tie the game with a field goal, and it was on. OT: Fresno State gets the ball down to the 1 with a first and goal and the Pokes hold 4 consecutive running plays (2 handoffs, 2 QB keepers) to force a turnover on downs. A missed field goal attempt form 40 yards out in the first OT for Wyoming means Double Overtime... DOUBLE OVERTIME IN THE POSTSEASON PEOPLE!!! Wyoming scores on a crazy scramble and toss to the pylon. Then another great stop for the Cowboys defense on 4th and 5 and the bowl season is kicked off right with a barnburner.

- Next is the St. Pete Bowl which many people look at and think, come on, I'm not watching a garbage game between 2nd rate teams from two overrated conferences. But look past it at the great athletes involved and you might find one of the greatest young talents in all of college football in WR Mohamed Sanu. Returning kicks, rushing for touchdowns, and heck even throwing for some, this guy can take over any game whether or not he plays for a top 5 team.

So next time you want to call yourself a sports fan just remember that you can call yourself a "Gator fan" because you watched them play a very good Richmond team or a "Cowboys fans" because you visited the state of Texas once when you were 5 but, a real sports fans wouldn't spend a Saturday night watching a re-run of Elf on TBS because there's "nothing on"...
